What to expect
Explore the mangroves, creeks and tidal flats of King Sound and experience the Bardi people’s special relationship with the land and sea. Share an in-depth knowledge of bush food, medicine plants and traditional, sustainable hunting and fishing practices. Forage for oysters, hear Terry’s stories and along the way discover a culture that has lived in harmony with this country for thousands of years and continues to practice traditional ways of caring for the land.
Terry will show you where freshwater comes from a particular rock which is submerged in salt water when the tide is full. Leaving the freshwater we will walk along the sand flats to cook the rock oysters on the rock using local spinifex grass. Once the oysters have been eaten Terry will walk you to an old camp and sit under the shade of the maral tree and share his family connections to Cygnet Bay, Pilbara and skin groups. You will also learn how the Dampier Peninsula does not have any rock art, didgeridoos or the returning boomerang.
What is included
This 2-hour walking tour runs daily, at various times throughout the year based on the tides.
Please note this tour requires a reasonable level of fitness as you cross the rocks at low tide under the beautiful Kimberley sun.
Reef shoes are ideal or other enclosed shoes, water bottle, hat and sunscreen are recommended.
Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm is 220km north of Broome, on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. Accessible by the Cape Leveque Road which still has a 90km stretch of dirt.
We strongly recommend a four-wheel drive, the road is regularly graded but can still be quite rough at times. The drive from Broome to Cygnet Bay takes approximately 2.5 hours.
Due to the remote location, there is limited Telstra service and no WIFI available.

The tour departs and returns from Reception at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, Cape Leveque Road, Dampier Peninsula WA. Please meet 10 minutes prior to the tour departure time.

Fourth-generation pearler and Bardi man, Terry Hunter, owner of Borrgoron Coast to Creek Tours has been operating his tourism business for three years. Terry runs his tours out of the Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, 200 km north of Broome, on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula in Western Australia. This remote location gives visitors a unique Kimberley Coast experience through the eyes of a traditional custodian.
The history of Indigenous people on the Dampier Peninsula is thought to date back as far as 5,000 years and the communities on the north tip of the peninsula include those of the Bardi (land) and Jawi (island) coastal Indigenous groups. These local people retain a particularly special relationship with their land and sea that encompasses in-depth knowledge of bush food, medicine and traditional hunting and fishing practices.
