WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Perth

Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and is Australia’s sunniest state capital, averaging 147 days of sunshine a year. Located on the south western corner of Western Australia, Perth rests graciously on the Swan River and is home to roughly 2.1 million people. Perth allows you to experience the best of both natural and urban life, embrace soft-sand beaches and scenic parks and a thriving metropolis of small bars, creative restaurants and curated street art.

A beautiful string of 19 pristine and uncrowded beaches stretch out along Perth’s epic coast, from iconic Cottesloe to the surf hotspots like Margaret River and Scarborough. Take a short ferry ride to nearby Rottnest Island and meet a Quokka, the world’s happiest animal, with their friendly nature and cheeky grin. Stroll through leafy Kings Park one of the biggest inner-city parks in the world. Larger than New York's Central Park, Swam Park boasts 400-plus hectares of sculpted gardens and natural bushland. Activities include the treetop walk, Aboriginal cultural tours or in Spring see the Park’s carpet of wildflowers in bloom. Teeming with art, food, culture and history wander the city to discover laneway art, small bars, eclectic boutiques and edgy art galleries and museums. Or see through the urban landscape and discover the Aboriginal history and culture of Perth with an Aboriginal guide.

Adventure to the Swan Valley just 25 minutes from Perth. Western Australia's oldest wine region, the Swan Valley is home to 40 vineyards many with cellar doors offering tastings of the region's warm-climate wines. Explore the nearby port city of Fremantle home to experience world famous breweries, spooky prison tours and eerie shipwreck galleries.

Aboriginal people have inhabited the Perth area for at least 38,000 years, as evidenced by archaeological remains at Upper Swan. The Noongar people occupied the southwest corner of Western Australia, the Noongar know the area where Perth now stands as Boorloo. Perth has a strong and vibrant Aboriginal community and the city is a hub for a variety of Aboriginal experiences. Take a city walking tour, explore Aboriginal art centres and galleries or get out on Country for an immersive experience.

Welcome to Country is your guide to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experiences and products. As a not for profit organisation, our purpose is to address employment and economic outcomes in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses creates real positive social, cultural and economic outcomes for artists, families and communities. Aboriginal artist Mick Harding from Ngarga Warendj Dancing Wombat finds cultural and financial independence through his art. Booking an experience or buying an ethical product ‘puts money into our pockets and into our communities - we are closing the gap ourselves’ explains Mick.

Every booking or purchase through Welcome to Country supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, families and communities across Australia.
