Escaping the crowds and venture deeper into the Nitmiluk Gorge than any boat tours on this 2 day overnight canoeing adventure. Explore stunning Nitmiluk Gorge in the Katherine region of the Northern Territory at your own pace.

A boat transfer will take you to the top of the first gorge where you will take to the waters from the second gorge – allowing you to paddle further. The first of the sandy bank overnight campsites is located at Smitt Rock, in the 4th Gorge. With limited places available, you will have the privilege of embracing the serenity and camping in a million-star accommodation!

Nitmiluk Boat ramp. Gorge Road, Nitmiluk National Park. 30km from the township of Katherine, allow 30 minutes driving time.

What to expect

Be your own guide by exploring each gorge at your preferred pace, stop for a picnic and take in the scenery as you please. Experiencing the gorge system by canoe is a really moving and spiritual experience. The landscapes in each gorge are incredibly different to the last - each with its own shape, colours and beautiful sandstone walls.

All canoe adventure tours begin with a scenic journey by boat through Nitmiluk's first gorge before canoeists take to the waters to explore the second gorge and beyond. This overnight camping and canoeing trip allows the adventurer plenty of freedom in activities including swimming, photography, bush walking and exploring. Feel a spiritual connection as you venture away from the crowds into the tranquil and secluded 5th, 6th and 7th gorges. If you enjoy nature and the outdoors then this tour is for you.

The landscapes in each gorge are incredibly different to the last - each with its own shape, colours, beautiful sandstone walls and in some instances, breathtaking waterfalls.

To add to the adventure be prepared to transport your canoe across the rocks between gorges. The degree of difficulty varies depending on the time of year and water levels. Be rewarded at the end of a physical day by setting up camp and watching the sun go down in the afternoon before night-time brings an incredibly impressive celestial display.

The first designated overnight campsite is at the 5th gorge, which is approximately 9kms from the Visitors Centre. A high level of fitness is required for this tour.

What is included

This is a two day/one night adventure that departs daily from June to October.

Please note:
A camping permit from Parks and Wildlife is essential for overnight hire - please stay up to date following this link after making your tour booking to secure your campsite. Permits are limited and pre-booking is recommended. Camping is not permitted outside the designated camp sites at the 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th gorge. Wood fires are also not permitted, however gas and spirit burners may be used. All guests participating in the overnight canoe hire require a high level of fitness as you are required to port the canoes between each of the Gorges. Depending on river levels this could be for up to an hour at a time, keeping in mind that the canoes have a dry weight between 18 - 26 kilograms each. Guests must provide all your own camping gear, and food and water.

Seasonal:
During the months of approximately November / December – May, canoe hire does not operate for safety reasons, due to poor weather and perilous river conditions. The canoeing season will recommence once Parks and Wildlife have completed their annual safety and crocodile survey. For further information please speak to our reservations team.

Cash Deposit:
A $60.00 refundable cash deposit or pre-authorisation per canoe on the day is required at the start of your session hire. This can be done either on the morning at the Nitmiluk Canoe Shed (located at the Main Jetty), or the day prior at any Nitmiluk Kiosk - Visitors Centre, Cicada Lodge (for in-house guests), or Jatti Poolside Bistro. Cash deposits are refunded once you have returned no later than your allocated time, with no damage to Nitmiluk product. Pre-authorisation will release automatically after 7 days

Age Restrictions:
Children under the age of 5 years are not permitted to canoe due to safety regulations. Children aged between the ages of 6 – 12 years MUST be accompanied by an adult.
This tour is subject to river levels and conditions. Alcohol is not permitted.
