National Indigenous Art Fair

The National Indigenous Art Fair (NIAF) is an iconic annual event held on Sydney Harbour’s stunning foreshore, showcasing the latest award-winning ideas and innovations from Indigenous artists, designers and makers from remote art centres around the country; each community bringing their own range of unique handcrafted and limited-edition items, produced using locally sourced materials, natural fibres and dyes.

From artworks to design objects, fashion, jewellery, homewares, native dyed textiles, and kids puzzles, these inventive artisans are exemplars of sustainability, working closely with the resources found in their own environment, weaving Care for Country and creativity into one. The event will feature over 50 art and design stalls, Indigenous smoking ceremony, performances and choirs; workshops, children’s activities and bush food cooking demonstrations; a massive communal weaving project; plus a panel discussion speaking to the 2022 NAIDOC theme “Get Up, Stand up, Show Up.

NIAF 2022 is being held on 2 and 3 July 2022 at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in The Rocks.

The National Indigenous Art Fair also represents an incredible gathering of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creatives, with many travelling from the far corners of Australia – places like Ceduna, Haasts Bluff, the Tiwi Islands and Yuendumu – presenting a rare and exciting opportunity to interact directly with the makers.

Officially welcoming these remote practitioners to Sydney, local artists, designers and makers from Australia’s leading authentic First Nations marketplace – the Blak Markets – will join them in the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Cultural Experiences
In addition to more than 50+ inspirational art and design stalls, the National Indigenous Art Fair presents an impressive program of live cultural experiences, running from 10am to 5pm each day.

Early arrivals each morning will have the opportunity to participate in important Indigenous smoking ceremonies and join a procession into the National Indigenous Art Fair, watching as each stall is blessed and cleansed.
Singing performances by Mi-keisha and Djinama Yilaga Choir
Dance performances by Ngaran Ngaran Culture Awareness Aboriginal Dance Group and Wagana Dancers.
Hands-on experiences - work alongside local Aboriginal weavers on a communal weaving project.
Children’s activities - a storytelling session in the sand circle, boomerang painting and dance workshop on the Sunday.
Bushfoods Cooking Demonstrations by Indigenous chef, Matthew Atkins and Mirritya Mundya.
Panel discussion - In acknowledgement of the NAIDOC Week 2022 theme “Get Up, Stand up, Show Up” a panel discussing some of the current issues in Indigenous affairs
Bush Food & Plants

There will be food vans on site offering up a great bush food feast as well as IndigiGrow selling native bush food plants and herbs
