YOUR EXPERIENCE PROVIDER
Join an incredible Aboriginal-guided fishing experience that starts with a private helicopter transfer from Brisbane or the Gold Coast to stunning Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) in Queensland's south east region, just off the coast of Brisbane.
Local Quandamooka Traditional Owner, Andrew Watego, will be your guide for a beach fishing experience like no other. Catch bait, cast from the shoreline and cook your catch using traditional methods and local bush tucker whilst Andrew imparts his cultural knowledge to guests passed down from his ancestors.
Stradbroke Island, just off the coast of Brisbane, is home to the Quandamooka people who have lived in the area for tens of thousands of years.
With a focus on ocean fishing and fresh bait collection, you will experience fishing from the shoreline of pristine surf beaches on Minjerribah, including expert local tuition, learning how to cook and flavour your catch with bush-tucker, using traditional methods over a wood fire.
On arrival by helicopter, you will be met by your guide and head to a local beach where the fire will be lit and you will experience a brief Welcome to Country.
You will learn how to catch fresh bait, such as yabbies, beach worms, bloodworms and pipis (or eugaries as they are traditionally known on Quandamooka Country). Your fishing equipment will then be ready to cast into the surf for a few hours of fishing while sipping fresh coffee and enjoying wattle seed and lemon myrtle damper.
You will cook over an open fire right on the beach for your entree. Your catch of fresh local fish fillets that could include flathead, whiting, bream, tailor, mullet or dart, will then be wrapped in a wattleseed and lemon myrtle leaf parcel and baked in a hot sand oven to enjoy.
Then, it's back to the mainland via helicopter after a memorable, informative and tasty time on Minjerribah.
Your Indigenous fishing experience guide is Traditional Owner Andrew Watego. Andrew has fished North Stradbroke and Moreton Islands since he could hold a rod and reel. In that time, he has also been involved with club fishing at the highest level, recreational fishing with family and friends and commercial fishing.
His love of the saltwater around these two great islands comes from his ancestors and the information passed down over many years. Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) and Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) have been home to his people for more than 18,000 years.
Andrew still loves sitting with the old people and listening so he can share that knowledge with others.
Fishing is always best in the morning and the earlier the better. Arrive by helicopter from Brisbane or the Gold Coast for this 3 hour fishing experience with an Indigenous guide on Minjerribah.
