Join us on a 4WD adventure to Bawaka, 60km south of our community of Yirrkala, to get an insight into Yolŋu homeland life.

Insights into your experience

Experience traditional spear fishing and crab hunting. Learn about Moiety – Yirratja and Dhuwa (Kinship) and how this connects us to the land and to each other, one big Earth balanced. Hear about our seven seasons and see what the environment is telling us. This intimate and unique experience is available departing from Nhulunbuy or Yirrkala.

Tour Details: 

08:00 pick up from Nhulunbuy or Yirrkala in 4WD vehicle with Yolngu driver-guide and journey to one of the region's many Yolngu homelands.

Upon arrival you will be Welcomed to Yolgnu Country. This is a form of blessing for you to be on country and to keep you safe. Your guide will tell you about how Yolgnu gathered bush foods, and about traditional remedies or craft materials depending on the seasons and the make up of the group.

A picnic lunch is provided as part of the tour and may be supplemented by seafood gathered on the day.

Your guide will take you by foot or in vehicle to explore the area where there will be many photo opportunities.

16:00 return to Nhulunbuy.

Things to know

This is a full day tour departing daily at 8am and returning at 4pm. 

Please note: this tour runs on demand with a minimum of 4 pax; Final booking confirmation is subject to availability.

Cost includes:

  • Pick up and drop off at your accommodation or Gove Airport
  • Lunch
  • Cultural awareness experiences with Yolngu family group including: Yolngu culture and knipship, basic Yolngu Matha language, avoidance relationships, Yolngu sign language, what Yolngu people use for medicine, weaving, painting and other activities
  • Yolŋu driver-guides and highly capable 4X4 tour vehicles

Planning for your trip:

  • As Yolngu women dress conservatively, we ask that you do the same. Long skirts, long shorts or pants are suitable as are t-shirts. Please do not wear bikinis or mini-skirts. As you will spend most of your time outdoors, you should wear cool, comfortable clothing that will protect you from the sun and insects. Breathable natural fibres and/or synthetic wicking materials are highly recommended. Avoid synthetics that do not breathe well.
